Dear Volunteers, Donors and Friends of MOWOCNC
I want to start with a thank you for your volunteerism, outreach and donations as we navigate this current reality. Our goal has been to maintain delivery while keeping our recipients and volunteers safe. Our best option is to limit contact between volunteers, and between volunteers and recipients. MOWOCNC is now delivering weekly frozen meal boxes containing 5 complete meals along with a bag of fresh fruit. Every Monday or Thursday depending on the recipient's location volunteers are safely delivering food boxes to our growing list of recipients. Once per month, recipients also receive a shelf-stable meal box containing 10 meals, to help stock pantries and ensure a food supply if weekly delivery is interrupted. A volunteer phone brigade is calling recipients each weekday (or every other based on recipient preference) to check-in since we are not able to do in person weekday daily check-ins. Through this connection we have become aware of recipients who do not have food left in their homes or have run out of necessities with no access or ability to get more. Thus, MOWOCNC has started a new service delivering weekly emergency food and supply boxes to those most in need.
There are a number of ways you can support Meals on Wheels during this time:
Phone Calling: We have established a volunteer phone brigade to call recipients each weekday when they would normally be receiving a meal. Volunteers will be supplied with a call sheet, basic script, and instructions on how to share information gathered with the office.
Meal Delivery: A call for volunteers will be sent when our next frozen meal delivery date is set. We are not accepting any baked goods at this time. We are grateful for our wonderful bakers and will be back in touch when we resume regular deliveries.
Emergency Food and Supply Boxes: Volunteers have been a great source of supplies for and putting together of, emergency food and supply boxes. For details on what goes into making a complete box or a general list of items needed, please click here. Completed boxes and supplies can be delivered to the MOWOCNC office at 632 Laurel Hill Road (St Thomas More South Campus) between 10am-3pm M, T, W and on Thursdays between 9-10:30am or 1-3pm. Leave items on the cart or by the door with the sign for MOWOCNC. You can leave items (on a nice day) even if someone is not there as we may have just stepped out momentarily and will be back before 3PM.
If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity (shelf-stable food sorter, set-up, delivery, phone-caller) and have not already done so, please contact Heather Harris, Volunteer Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We understand that everyone has to make the best decisions for their own health and safety. Even if you volunteer and decide later that you are not comfortable or able, just let us know.
MOWOCNC is collecting donations to help cover the additional costs associated with dealing with COVID-19. To date, monthly food costs during the pandemic are approximately $32,000, over $16,000 more than our monthly budgeted food cost. To date we have added 35 individuals from our waitlist to our delivery routes and we are working to diminish the rolling waitlist which is now at 32. If you are able, please consider an additional gift to MOWOCNC to help us maintain service during this time. Please donate by clicking here or by mailing a check to MOWOCNC, PO Box 2102, Chapel Hill, NC 27515.
As of Monday, March 16, the Meals on Wheels office is closed to the public. The office will only be open for Staff as needed. We will reach out with specific date and times when volunteers will be needed. We will remain accessible through the contact form on this website, by email, or by phone at 919-942-2948. Any updates regarding delivery and volunteer needs will be communicated by email.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to add that MOWOCNC is a community. One made up of volunteers, recipients, donors, friends, vendors, partners and staff, all of whom make what we do possible. In this time of uncertainty, we want you to know, we are here for you. If you need support - getting food, doing a necessary errand, or just in need of a friendly voice to say hi and chat, please let us know. You can reach us at email@example.com or call 919-942-2948.
Together, we can deliver.
With appreciation -
